I went back and read your link to the story. I also did a search myself, finding as much evidence to the contrary. There's always two sides to every story and just because some college comes out with research doesn't mean it's true. If AP courses are not valuable, why did the Governor of Virginia create the Virtual AP school? Then you went and made this statement which contradicts what you previously said about AP courses:

Right now the bottom line is that kids in Pound don't have the same opportunities that kids in Wise have to take college credit courses due to the distance of Pound H.S. to UVA-Wise or MECC. Would a consolidated school make that more available to them? Yes if the new school was located within 5-10 minutes of the UVA-Wise campus.

I think what it boils down to is that I'm open to listening to the pros and cons of each concept, consolidation or renovation. Some of you don't seem to be that way. Your mind is closed. Right now we need to let our elected officials decide what is the best direction for Wise County, and at this point it appears to be renovation. If it's cost effective, I can live with that. But we'd all better get ready to dig deeper into our pockets.

Let me state that just because a Governor of Virginia does something in education that does not mean that it is right. In an earlier post I used some figures regarding the SOLS. This did not mean that I approve of them. A Governor of Virginia put them in- and I believed then and I believe now that they are a mistake.
If a school like Harvard is getting queasy about AP it should give one pause. Even with my downing of the Ivy League- I don't think Harvard is a bad school.
I do not believe I contradicted myself. How many students are there in Wise County High Schools? How many AP students? It is a matter of simple logistics that transportation arrangements could be made for ten or fifteen percent of the high school population rather than one hundred percent. I do not pretend this is easy- but it can be done. The AP classes at Pound seem to be offered by television- this could be explored.
The AP concept could become quite dated in a few years- it is dangerous to build a school about a concept that could rapidly become obsolete.

LPDFTBL.. you keep saying youre not for consolidation.. if so, then why do you keep making the argument for it?

And referring to the thing about the old car.. yes you keep replacing parts, because eventually it will become a classic. Have you ever watched Barrett-Jackson? Old cars are far more preferable to new garbage. The same with old buildings. Buildings that have a history and style of the past are far more desireable. And there's no valid reason they shouldnt be used.

Like was mentioned earlier, look at the Appalacian School of Law. They're using Grundy's old school buildings and seem to be doing quite well. If its good enough for a college, then why are old buildings not good enough for high school?

You hold the opinion that consolidation is better.. that doesnt make it so. And we will fight it as long as we can.

I'm the one that graduated in 2002. And NO plan for consolidation benefits any kid from Pound, Appy, or St. Paul in any form or fashion.

Where did you graduate from and how long have you lived in the area post graduation. Highschool and college.

And we ask for all to have input not just the one's who think they know everything. But the kids. And a former graduate says something and you blast them.

Educate us ignorant hillbillies. I don't see a big demand in this area for the jobs you talked about.
BA's etc. where is the demand for those jobs?

I am actually for consolidation if done right. But if this is what it's all about, arrogant attitudes from people who spent most of their adult life without the area.
I'd rather stay backwards. I've never seen a person with so much i am better than the world attitude.

Sometimes that snub ya nose attitude, brings some of the remarks as you seem to ask for them. Sorry.

Craes and a few others got a good education from these here hills.

Considering our own local colleges. Not every one is wanting to up and leave here to go to college. And i think we have many who have. And returned to the area.

With what i read on this. I may want to go back to anti-consolidation. What's 80 million dollars for people who are taught to know how to, well be people. And not forget their raising. Or at least remember it. Seems some forgot the humble area they come from. Big schools and city life will do that to you.
